Hi everyone – Josette Bushell-Mingo writing to you … hoping all is well and that you continue to thrive. I am still in Sweden, travelling internationally and continuing to cause theatrical mischief. Part of my work is as a member of TYRCK inspired by PUSH which was created some years ago. (if unfamiliar with PUSH please Google it!)
The Swedish version is a collective of ' Afro Svensk', or Swedish artists of African descent or a parent from one of the African countries. The goals are similar to PUSH - to inspire, challenge and redefine how African decent artists are perceived in the arts and to examine the history that has created an often naive and racist cultural society here in Sweden- and in-fact in the Nordic regions.
TYRCK has now received funding that allows us to lobby and create a series of works and seminars to develop ideas for the future and part of that is to take a short intensive trip to London to meet fellow Black artists, Black theatre organisations, national theatre institutions and funders, see Black theatre and allow a new space to reflect on where we go in the future.
Approx. 10 of us - from theatre producers, film makers, opera singers, actors are coming over on 1st - 4th June 2012. We have organised several strategic meetings. Together with Natasha Graham who has also visited Sweden as part of TYRCK seminars here in Stockholm. I was wondering if you would be interested to meet us - as a small creative representation of Black British artist/practitioners and supporters - an artist round table.
Goal:
To inspire, challenge and support each-other, and gain new insights and knowledge and new contacts.
Agenda:
1. Who are we and why do we do what we do?
2. What are the challenges of being a Black artists/ practitioners in our respective countries?
3. What are we doing artistically and strategically to deal with these issues.
We are looking to meet between 3pm – 6pm on Saturday June 2nd 2012. Venue will be confirmed- likely to be Young Vic, Waterloo.
Hope you can make it! (Snacks provided)
Please respond to Natasha Graham – on Natasha@facefront.org or call 07957163004 by 28th May 2012.
